Putting Science Back into the Classroom:

Using GPS, GIS and probeware to lead a meaningful Bay experience

Second session- April 27-28, 2007

Proposed location- Blandy Farm, Clarke County

October Session

Preliminary Agenda for April Session

Note: This is the second of two workshops for teachers in Fairfax County, Va.

This project is designed to help science teachers use Global Positioning Systems (GPS), Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and probeware to direct watershed education and restoration efforts in their community. Targeted schools serve students who live in critical subwatersheds that have the greatest potential for riparian restoration, as determined through landcover analysis.

Teachers will learn how to lead Project Learning Tree activities that guide youth through a series of activities that investigate the water cycle, renewable and non-renewable resources, and changing land use and its effect on water quality. Geo-referenced historic aerial photos of school neighborhoods provide the basis for this study.
