Trees of Hampton High School

Introduction

Trees in developed areas are especially important because they improve water quality, reduce crime, help children perform better in school, reduce energy costs and increase property values.

Trees improve water quality because they reduce the amount of stormwater that carries pollutants into our streams and rivers. Trees also filter and absorb air pollution before it enters streams and rivers.

Healthy growing trees are necessary to reap the benefits of trees. In this study we will investigate factors that may be contributing to tree growth on our school campus. We will answer questions such as:

1. What factors influence tree growth?
2. Which trees appear to be healthiest?
3. Which trees will grow the most between now and fall 2006?

Dependent variable: Tree growth
Independent variables: Factors that influnece tree growth
