Margaret Beeks Elementary School

We are growing a vegetable garden and orchard trees in an effort to demonstrate sustainable living, and provide an additional opportunity for children to be exposed to nature.

On 9/7/08 we planted four fall crops: collards, kale, spinach and turnips. We experimented with two different growing methods, growing on the ground and in raised beds. In the picture at right, you can see the ground plots in the foreground, and the brick raised beds behind them.

Question: Will our crops grow better on a raised bed?

Last planting dates for fall crops: kohlrabi (Oct. 7), spinach (Oct. 7), radish (Nov. 7)

Next Question: When will the first frost occur?
