Workshop 11Christiansburg High SchoolNov. 16, 2007 This was a one-hour session designed to fit into a professional development workshop already planned for county teachers. The focus was watersheds. Extension Specialist Jeff Kirwan, and Geospatial Project Developer Jen McKee introduced teachers to the PLT secondary module, Places We Live, then moved directly into Activity 3- using historic aerial photographs to map your community through time. We used a place we thought every student would recognize, independent of where they live in the county, the New River Valley Mall. Outline: A. Introduction to Places We Live B. Historic photos- New River Valley Mall C. Using dot-grids to calculate land use change D. Using acetate overlays to map changes in roads, landuse, etc. E. Using true and false color satellite photography to visualize land use and its effect on water quality. At the conclusion of the workshop we met with several teachers who were interested in piloting a series of posters that could be used with their classes. As a result of this collaboration, a series of maps and photos publications are now available for download, or for ordering as a poster-sized printed product. Special thanks to Charles Jervis, teacher, Auburn High School, for helping with this process. Maps and posters for Montgomery County teachers |
